The Beginning of Something Beautiful

Hello all you beautiful people! You’ve found my page!

Northern Spirit Publishing House is a pet project of mine. I’ve wanted to be an author since I was a little kid. Childhood photographs usually show me with a book and a pen in my hand. I’d always said I would someday publish a book… And then I woke up one morning in January 2017 and thought, hold on. I’ve been saying that for years. I’ve been declaring that for over a decade now. It’s time to actually do something about it.

It was an article about a man who wrote a book in seven days that sparked my inspiration. I’d never been in a better position in my life than right then and there to just fully immerse myself in the process of not only penning my book but also publishing and marketing it. The idea was that holding a tight deadline over yourself made you more productive; you were more likely to succeed if you kept up the momentum. I remembered all the plot bunnies I’d had running around my head in the last decade, and how so many of them got delegated to the dusty shelves of the back closet. So, on January 12, 2017, I opened my laptop and typed away.

That first day, I wrote 8, 000 words. Really good! The next day, I wrote 4, 000 words. Not bad. The third day, I had already lost steam and only managed a thousand. I did not end up completing my book in just seven days… But, I still learned a lot about the publishing and marketing process while I was at it. On January 29, I was still working on polishing my first draft.

Although I’d been meaning to publish it by January 31, I took a while longer than expected with editing and formatting the ebook. So, in the end, Fairie Lights and Empty Houses was released on February 12! It is now on sale both on this website and on Amazon. Even though it took me 31 days to get my story out, from its beginnings as a single word on a blank document to its completion as a 26, 000-word collection of impressions, musings, poems and true encounters, I am still immensely proud of myself! I may not have succeeded at that specific goal of writing a book in seven days… But I succeeded at the TRUE aim, which was to publish a book. 🙂

On the business side of things…

I am also happy to say that I officially registered Northern Spirit Publishing House as a business with the Ontario government on January 25! Isn’t that crazy, how a little piece of paper makes this feel somehow more legitimate? Though this is technically a business, at this point in time, I am not too concerned about sales. I am just too excited about what this means for my writing process and endeavours to think about the money just yet. Rather, I am more interested in putting out the best content that I can, more for my own personal satisfaction, and then growing my audience.

Hence, the goal of this publishing house for 2017 is to publish one book a month. Seems like a lofty goal, eh? But I have faith that it can be done, so watch this space over the next eleven months! If I could set up a business, write a book and learn so much about the self-publishing process in four weeks, I am 100% sure that there will be boundless more achievements to unlock by the end of the year. 😀

This space will also be publishing accompanying audiobooks as well as the occasional podcast. I’m also going to be keeping this space active with blog posts about my experience growing a self-publishing business, and hopefully that will attract a group of like-minded individuals who are passionate about writing and want to get their voices out there! Ultimately, as I am a traveler, and have fallen too deeply in love with the location-independent lifestyle to ever give it up, this online business will also serve as my ticket to my freedom. I am so excited to share the journey with you.

So, come along for the ride! Let’s see how far this pet project/business gets in just a year. 🙂

Cheers,
Alaska
